Zika vs Dengue: Diagnosis Challenges and Mosquito Bite Prevention Tips

Zika virus, a type of flavivirus, is primarily transmitted by mosquitoes, particularly Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, which are also known to spread dengue and chikungunya. This RNA virus shares similarities with dengue, leading to potential cross-reactivity in diagnostic tests, which complicates accurate diagnosis in regions where multiple flaviviruses are endemic. What distinguishes Zika from other mosquito-borne viruses is its ability to be transmitted through sexual contact in addition to mosquito bites, making control and prevention efforts more challenging. The Zika virus is also associated with a higher incidence of Guillain-Barré syndrome, a rare neurological condition characterized by paralysis and muscle weakness.
