After the emphatic victory in the third Ashes Test at Headingley in Leeds, England’s captain Ben Stokes praised the performances of Chris Woakes and Mark Wood. Woakes, playing his first red ball game since March of the previous year, made significant contributions with both bat and ball. He took six wickets in the match and played a crucial 32-run innings in the second innings, helping England secure a three-wicket win and keeping the series alive at 2-1.
“I didn’t realise that Woakes hasn’t played a Test for so long, he is Mr. Consistent. Having someone who can bat like him batting at 8 helps us. Hope he can do something similar when he plays next,” Stokes said after the game.
Stokes hailed Woakes as one of the most consistent players in the team, recognizing his outstanding performance in the match. Woakes’ contributions were instrumental in England’s success, and his all-round abilities proved crucial to their victory.
Stokes also praised Mark Wood, who was awarded the Player of the Match. He expressed admiration for Wood’s ability to consistently bowl at speeds of 95 mph, emphasizing the impact it has on the game. Stokes also highlighted Wood’s aggressive batting style, describing him as a “free spirit” with the bat. He acknowledged that while it may not always work, Wood’s fearless approach provides a better chance for success.
Stokes said, “We had Woody and Woakesy back in and they did well. We picked teams and look how they can impact us in the game. We try to see how they can be influential in the game,”
Before the third Test, the English side made three changes to their lineup, including the inclusion of Chris Woakes, Mark Wood, and Moeen Ali. This decision paid off as the team managed to turn the series around with a victory in the match, boosting their confidence after being down 2-0.
The win at Headingley provided a much-needed morale boost to the English team, keeping their hopes alive in the Ashes series and giving them renewed confidence going forward.
