After South Korea’s withdrawal from the tournament bidding to organize World Cup, China is most likely to stage 2023 Asian Cup.

Korean Football Association conveyed their decision to Asian Football Confederation. They cited ‘strategic focus’ as a reason for abandoning the bid. Both the Koreas are jointly bidding to host the Women’s Football World Cup in 2023. Both the countries started to hold diplomatic talks. But in the wake of US- North Korea nuclear discussion, football has been sidelined.

The head of KFA, Chun Han-jin said, “For the women’s World Cup, Fifa and South Korean government will provide active support so that the joint hosting by South and North Koreas can be materialized.”

He added, “We need to make a choice between the 2023 AFC Asian Cup and Women’s World Cup. We decided to focus on the women’s world cup strategically.”

This year’s Asian Cup was expanded to 24 teams for the first time. It started on 5th January and ended on first February. United Arab Emirate hosted the tournament this year.

Seoul’s withdrawal will most likely make China the host country for Asian Cup 2023. The confirmation on 4th June from Asian Football Confederation will officially end the speculation. If that happens, this would be their second time hosting the football championship.
