Former opener from Tamil Nadu, VB Chandrasekhar today breathed his last at the age of 57. Police informed the cricketer’s body was rescued from his residence. They suspect it to be a case of suicide.

VB Chandrasekhar, popularly known as VB has left behind two daughters and wife.

A hard-hitting opener, he represented India in seven ODIs, with an innings of 53 being his highest score. In 81 First Class matches, VB Chandrasekhar notched up 4999 runs at 43.09 with 10 centuries.

After his eventful career, where he was a part of the last Tamil Nadu team to triumph in the Ranji Trophy in 1988- he later led the State side and then briefly played for Goa- VB Chandrasekhar coaching and commentary.

He also managed Chennai Super Kings in the franchise’s first three years and instrumental in getting the iconic MS Dhoni to CSK.

A source from Police revealed to Economic Times, “He was under a lot of stress due to the debts incurred but it has also come to light that his health was deteriorating and he had become very frail. The Tamil Nadu cricket fraternity is in a state of shock as he always shared a close relationship with former BCCI President N Srinivasan. He was instrumental in getting M S Dhoni to Srinivasan’s IPL franchise Chennai Super Kings.”

The Indian cricket board expressed their grief on Twitter and wrote, “The BCCI regrests to inform the former India opener VB Chandrasekhar is no more. Our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and fans.”

Former and current cricketers like Sachin Tendulkar, Anil Kumble, Suresh Raina have mourned his death and wished him eternal peace.

His mortal remains will be kept at his residence in Mylapore and his last rites will take place from 9.00 am on Saturday.
