Team India claimed their eighth Asia Cup title in style by defeating Sri Lanka by 10 wickets in the final held in Colombo on Sunday. The victory was a result of a spectacular performance by the Indian team, marked by Mohammed Siraj’s outstanding bowling spell and the flawless partnership between Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan in the final.
In the final, Sri Lanka opted to bat first but soon regretted their decision as Mohammed Siraj tore through their batting lineup. At one point, Sri Lanka found themselves reeling at 13/6, with Siraj taking four wickets in a single over. Although Kusal Mendis (17) and Dushan Hemantha (13*) offered brief moments of resistance, they couldn’t change the course of the game. Siraj finished with exceptional figures of 6/21 in seven overs, while Hardik Pandya contributed with 3/3 in 2.2 overs, and Jasprit Bumrah took 1/23 in five overs. Sri Lanka was eventually bowled out for just 50 runs in 15.2 overs.
Chasing this modest target, India’s opening pair of Ishan Kishan (23*) and Shubman Gill (27*) displayed exceptional composure and skill, securing the win without losing a wicket in just 6.1 overs.
The efficient performance allowed India to clinch their eighth Asia Cup title, with Mohammed Siraj receiving the ‘Player of the Match’ award for his outstanding bowling display. Meanwhile, Kuldeep Yadav was named the ‘Player of the Series‘ for his impressive spin bowling throughout the tournament.
Shubman Gill emerged as the tournament’s leading run-scorer, amassing 302 runs in six matches at an impressive average of 75.50, which included one century and two fifties. With this victory, Team India is now set to prepare for their final assignment before the ICC Cricket World Cup in October, a three-match ODI series against Australia beginning on September 22 in India.
Notable players from the Indian team, including Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer, Hardik Pandya, and Jasprit Bumrah, were spotted at the Kalina Airport in Mumbai upon their return to India.
