In the Arctic Open 2023 women’s singles event held in Vantaa, Finland, Indian badminton star P.V. Sindhu secured a convincing victory over her Japanese counterpart Nozomi Okuhara. The match ended with Sindhu winning 21-13, 21-6, marking her 10th victory over Okuhara in their 19th head-to-head encounter.

Sindhu and Okuhara have a history of intense competition, having faced each other in the finals of two world championships, with each player claiming victory once. In this particular match, Sindhu initially fell behind, trailing 4-0, but she quickly rebounded, utilizing her good reach to take the lead at 11-6 during the opening game. Her aggressive style of play allowed her to secure the first game with ease.

Sindhu’s dominant approach continued into the second game, where she led 11-3 at the break, ultimately sealing the match and advancing to the round of 16. In another women’s singles fixture, Aakarshi Kashyap made a remarkable comeback, overcoming a game down to defeat Lianne Tan of Belgium with a score of 18-21, 22-20, 21-18. Kashyap, ranked 41st, is set to face world No. 11 Wang Zhiyi of China in the round of 16.

However, in the men’s singles, Harshit Agarwal did not qualify for the main draw, as he lost to Joakim Oldorff of Finland with a score of 21-19, 21-12. In the mixed doubles category, the Indian duo of K. Sai Pratheek and Tanisha Crasto successfully progressed to the round of 32 by defeating the Danish pair Andreas Sondergaard-Iben Bergstein in the qualifying round with a score of 26-24, 21-18.

Upcoming matches will feature Kidambi Srikanth facing Max Weisskirchen of Germany in the round of 32. Kiran George and Mithun Manjunath will also begin their men’s singles campaign, while Tanisha Crasto will participate in both the mixed doubles and women’s doubles round of 32 matches, partnering with K Sai Pratheek and Ashwini Ponnappa, respectively.
