Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chairman Sreedhara Somanath visited the house of Indian chess player Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa in Chennai, where he presented a replica miniature of the GSLV rocket as an encouraging gift. Somanath wished Praggnanandhaa success in his upcoming chess matches and was joined by Praggnanandhaa’s father, Ramesh Babu, during the meeting.
During their interaction, Somanath mentioned that the Pragyan Rover on the Moon is currently inactive but encouraged the chess player to remain active and make India proud in the days to come. He expressed his pride in Praggnanandhaa’s accomplishments and his hope for the young chess prodigy to become the world’s number one chess player.
“We are very proud of him for his accomplishments and also for his world ranking, 15 now. I believe in the coming days he will become world number one. He is Praggnan on the ground, and we have Pragyan on the Moon. What we have achieved on the moon, he has done it on land. He will also be working with us in promoting space,“ Mr Somanath stated.
Somanath emphasized the connection between Praggnanandhaa on the ground and the Pragyan Rover on the Moon and announced that the chess player would collaborate with ISRO to promote space activities in India. The ISRO Chairman expressed pride in both Praggnanandhaa’s achievements and his current world ranking, which is 15.
“It is a very proud thing that he has visited us. He also invited me to visit Sriharikota where rockets are being launched. We are very proud of what ISRO has achieved,” Mr Praggnanandhaa stated.
Following the visit, Praggnanandhaa expressed his pride in Somanath’s visit and revealed that he received an invitation to visit Sriharikota, the spaceport in Andhra Pradesh. Praggnanandhaa’s journey in chess includes competing against the World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen in the International Chess Federation World Cup in Baku, Azerbaijan, on August 24, where he put up a strong fight but ultimately fell short.
