With the Mumbai Indians (MI) facing a likely exit from IPL 2024, questions have arisen about resting key players like Jasprit Bumrah and Rohit Sharma ahead of the T20 World Cup. Fans are urging the franchise to prioritize player rest, especially considering the significant roles Bumrah, Rohit, Hardik Pandya, and Suryakumar Yadav are expected to play for India in the T20 World Cup. MI’s poor performance, currently last on the table with six points from 11 matches, adds weight to the argument for player rest.

However, MI’s management seems to have a different perspective, as revealed by all-rounder Naman Dhir in a press conference before their match against Sunrisers Hyderabad. The primary reason for MI and Bumrah’s reluctance to rest may be Bumrah’s contention for the Purple Cap, tied with Punjab Kings‘ Harshal Patel at 17 wickets. Despite not often opening the bowling for MI and facing some challenges in a few matches, Bumrah has had a generally successful IPL, which boosts his confidence and potentially benefits the Indian team.

“Right now, there’s no such thing that’s happening. Nothing of this sort has been discussed, but at the end of the day, it’s up to the team management to take the final call,” he stated.

James Franklin, the batting coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad, downplays the impact of Bumrah’s usage, suggesting that it doesn’t significantly affect the outcome. Despite MI’s recent struggles against Sunrisers, Bumrah has been the most economical bowler in their matchups. The upcoming contest between Bumrah and Sunrisers’ batsmen, particularly Travis Head and Heinrich Klaasen, is anticipated to be a highlight of the match.

In summary, while fans advocate for resting key players like Bumrah for MI’s remaining matches, the franchise’s management and players seem inclined to continue competing, possibly driven by individual milestones like Bumrah’s contention for the Purple Cap and the desire for continued form ahead of the T20 World Cup.

“Let’s see what sort of tactics Mumbai go with. How they use Bumrah. I know there has been a little bit of debate around about how he gets used, but again, it doesn’t really matter where he gets used. He generally has a pretty big impact on games. But if we see that showdown, I am sure it will be pretty exciting to watch. Those are the sort of contests that not only your team or your coaching staff, but people around the world, journalists, media, you want to watch those contests because it is the best going against the best,” stated Franklin, who played for MI in the past.
