Five Indian weightlifters are set to participate in the IWF Grand Prix II Weightlifting 2023 in Doha, Qatar, a crucial Paris 2024 Olympic qualifier that runs until December 14. The competition encompasses 10 weight categories for both men and women. India will be represented by two women and three men, including national champion Ajith Narayan and Commonwealth Games gold medallist Achinta Sheuli, both competing in the men’s 73kg division.

Mirabai Chanu, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic silver medallist and a 2017 world champion, will be present at the Doha event for the weigh-in but won’t participate due to an injury sustained during the Asian Games 2023. This mirrors her non-participation in the World Weightlifting Championships 2023 earlier this year. The qualification process for the Paris 2024 Summer Games requires lifters to attend the 2023 World Championships and the 2024 World Cup. Additionally, they must participate in at least three other specified events, such as the 2023 Grand Prix I and II.

The IWF Grand Prix II Weightlifting 2023 is a key qualifying tournament for the Paris 2024 Olympics. Competitors in Olympic weight classes will earn Olympic Qualification Ranking (OQR) points based on their best total results in the snatch and clean and jerk. The top 10 athletes in each weight category, with one highest-ranked athlete per country, will secure Olympic quotas for their national teams when the qualification cycle concludes in April 2024.

Bindyarani Devi, a Commonwealth Games silver medallist, will compete in the non-Olympic women’s 55kg weight division, while CWG bronze winner Gurdeep Singh will participate in the non-Olympic men’s +109kg category. The Indian weightlifting team aims to deliver strong performances and accumulate OQR points, advancing their quest for a spot in the Paris 2024 Olympics.
