Just one place. Two candidates. The Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals are now competing for the fourth open spot after Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Gujarat Titans, and Punjab Kings advanced to the IPL 2025 Playoffs. But the equation is more complicated than that. The arithmetic suggests otherwise, even though Tuesday’s match between MI and DC is essentially a knockout. If MI prevails, DC is eliminated and their spot in the top four is guaranteed. However, if DC wins, the fourth spot will still be up for grabs, and the outcome of the remaining games will then decide the fate of both clubs.
The Mumbai weather adds another spice to the story. A washout is not completely ruled out because the city has been placed under a yellow notice for Wednesday evening. The two points will then be divided between Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals. Two things could happen if both teams are left with a match versus the Punjab Kings each. Even a victory for the Capitals, which would put them at 15 points as well, would not ensure them a spot in the playoffs. If MI loses against PBKS, they would still be at 15 because tonight’s game is a washout. MI has a higher NRR than the Capitals, thus they won’t be out of the woods.
The Mumbai climate adds even more intrigue to the story. There is no way to rule out a washout given the city’s yellow notice for Wednesday night. Should that occur, DC and MI will split the two points. A few things could happen if both clubs are left with one game apiece versus the Punjab Kings. Because tonight’s game is a washout, even a victory for the Capitals, which would put them at 15 points as well, would not guarantee them a spot in the playoffs. If MI loses against PBKS, they would still be at 15. The Capitals will not be out of the woods because they are lagging behind MI in terms of NRR.
“The forecast in Mumbai is for heavy rains and there is a strong likelihood that the game will be washed out,” he wrote. “Just as the game between RCB vs SRH has been moved out of Bengaluru in the quest for consistency and in the interest of the league it is my request that tomorrow’s game also be moved to a different location as we have known for the better part of 6 days that the forecast for 21st in Mumbai is for heavy showers,” an e-mail accessed by the website states.
Jindal’s appeal comes after KKR CEO Venky Mysore expressed annoyance at the rule’s tardy adoption, which would have allowed rain-disturbed games to be extended by 120 minutes. Mysore noted that KKR’s aspirations of making the playoffs might have been preserved by an earlier implementation. The rule, which was implemented after the competition resumed, could have saved their May 17 encounter against RCB, which was called off because of the rain.
