In their opening match at the 100th Anniversary Spanish Hockey Federation – International Tournament, the Indian Men’s Hockey Team displayed a fighting performance against the hosts, Spain, in Barcelona. Despite their efforts, Spain emerged victorious with a closely fought 2-1 win.

The match started with India pressing high and displaying an aggressive style of play in the first quarter. However, they couldn’t find the back of the net, and it was Spain’s Pau Cunill who scored the opening goal in the 11th minute, putting Spain in the lead.

In the second quarter, India focused on controlling possession and launching counterattacks to equalize, but Spain’s defense held firm, and the score remained 1-0 in favor of the hosts at halftime.

In the third quarter, India intensified their attacks and repeatedly tested Spain’s defense, but Joaquin Menini managed to extend Spain’s lead with a well-placed deflection, doubling their advantage.

In the fourth quarter, India continued to push for a comeback, creating scoring opportunities, but they were unable to find their first goal. Meanwhile, Spain shifted to counter-attacks and earned back-to-back penalty corners but couldn’t convert them.

In the dying minutes of the game, Indian Men’s Hockey Team Captain Harmanpreet Singh scored from a penalty corner, providing a glimmer of hope for India. However, Spain held on to their lead and prevented India from finding another goal, ultimately securing a 2-1 victory.

Despite the loss, India showed determination and resilience throughout the match. The team’s next challenge will be facing the Netherlands in their upcoming game on 26th July 2023 at 21:30 IST.
