As winter approaches, so do the numerous flu and virus diseases that will cause everyone to cough and sneeze at least once a month. The rising temperatures may be the cause of the increased frequency of colds, but our deteriorating immune also plays a big part at this point. Nonetheless, maintaining lung health with a few simple yet effective activities can boost immunity and stave off illnesses and infections. Here are five activities that will help you breathe easier this winter.
Alternate breathing through the nose
Maintain a straight spine while sitting. Now inhale through one nostril while blocking the other with your thumb. Next, do the same with the other nostril. To increase lung capacity, balance the body’s warming energy, and improve nasal airflow, do this for five to ten minutes each day.
The breathing of the belly
Start by comfortably lying down or sitting. After that, put one hand on your belly and the other on your chest. Let your belly rise as you take a breath through your nose, and then slowly release it through the same opening. Spend five to ten minutes doing this exercise each morning to allow fresh air to enter your lungs. It lessens chest breathing that is shallow and strengthens the diaphragm.
Jogging lightly
Light jogging for 20 to 30 minutes is an excellent aerobic exercise to activate your lungs and increase your physical and respiratory stamina. Breathlessness brought on by the cold, which is prevalent in the winter, is lessened by the exercise.
Breathing with pursed lips
Pursed lip breathing is an excellent technique to relax the lungs if you are having trouble breathing or are exhausted from an intense workout. Breathe in via your nose first, then gently exhale through your pursed lips. This works especially well for managing dyspnea and when chilly air causes the lungs to contract.
Stretching the ribs
Place your hands on your hips and stand erect. Now, as you inhale, extend your ribs outward and hold them for five counts. Exhale slowly now and return to the beginning posture. This activity relieves stiffness that is prevalent during a cold, helps the chest wall expand, and clears mucus.
