David Bedingham, a batter for South Africa, stated that his team is thrilled to be on the verge of winning the World Test Championship (WTC). On the second day of the WTC Final 2025, South Africa led by 218 runs and had Australia reeling at 144/8 at stumps. The Proteas left Australia reeling at 73/7 after a pair of runs from Kagiso Rabada (3/44) and Lungi Ngidi (3/35) in the second innings.
Mitchell Starc (16*) and Alex Carey (43) made some lower-order contributions, though, which helped them push their advantage over 200. David Bedingham stated that they are completely sure of chasing down the target in the fourth innings and would devise stronger strategies after spotting a chance to end the match on Day 3.
“We’re very confident. I think the batters will have their plans. But yeah, I think it’s an amazing day. And I think when they started batting in their third innings, I think we would have definitely had them or taken them 220-8. So, I think you’re very confident and I think there’s a massive belief in this team,” stated Bedingham in the press conference at the end of the day’s play.
Additionally, Bedingham stated that although South Africa is thrilled about the incredible possibility of winning the WTC, the game may still go either way.
“I think it’s just an amazing chance and I think we’re all very, very excited about the opportunity to win. Like I said, it could go either way, but I think us as a team are very, very excited and there’s a lot of belief in the dressing room,” he attched.
Teams have chased down 200-plus objectives in the fourth innings four times at Lord’s in its illustrious history. The most recent was in June 2022, when England defeated New Zealand, chasing down 277 runs in 78.5 overs.
As they approach the conclusion of their 27-year ICC championship drought—their most recent victory occurred in the Champions Trophy in 1998—South Africa will draw some motivation from the previous four wins.
