The BCCI has asked Rohit Sharma to decide on his future after the Champions Trophy 2025, regardless of India’s performance in the tournament. At 38, Rohit faces a race against time, as his current form does not guarantee a place in India’s future plans. While he is keen to continue playing, his selection for the England tour depends on an exceptional Champions Trophy or a standout IPL 2025. If he fails to deliver, the BCCI will need to finalize India’s next captain for ODIs and Tests soon to ensure a smooth transition.
“The selectors and people in the board had this discussion with Rohit around the time of the last selection meeting. He has been told that he needs to decide how he wants to plan his future after the Champions Trophy. The team management has certain plans going into the next World Test Championship (WTC) cycle and the ODI World Cup. They want to ensure everyone is on the same page for a smoother transition,” a BCCI source as saying.
Rohit Sharma fulfilled a long-standing dream by leading India to a T20 World Cup victory, but his ultimate goal has always been to win the 50-over World Cup. After coming close in 2023, he faces the challenge of staying in contention for the 2027 edition, when he will be 40. Whether he continues as captain or steps down, Rohit will need to deliver consistently with the bat to secure his place in the squad for the tournament in South Africa. His path forward remains a key discussion between him and the BCCI.
Rohit Sharma’s biggest challenge remains his form, with three ODIs against England and the Champions Trophy ahead. As India’s captain, he needs a strong comeback to secure his future. In the 2023 World Cup, he led from the front with aggressive starts, a strategy unlikely to change. However, his recent Ranji Trophy outing for Mumbai saw low scores of 3 and 28. With his return to ODIs, a format he has excelled in, the upcoming matches could be crucial in determining his career trajectory and future in Indian cricket.
Virat Kohli, like Rohit Sharma, has faced a rough patch in form, but the selectors and BCCI are willing to give him a longer rope. His recent Test series against Australia was his worst in a full-fledged series Down Under, managing just 190 runs in 10 innings. Without his century in Perth, his tally drops to just 90 runs from six innings. Despite the slump, the management appears to have more patience with Kohli as they assess his future contributions.
