The 16-man Bangladesh National Cricket Team roster for the next Test series against the Sri Lanka National Cricket Team was revealed by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on Wednesday, June 4. The release of the Test team for Team Bangladesh’s inaugural campaign in the 2025–2027 ICC World Test Championship (WTC) cycle has also secured Najmul Hossain Shanto fate.
Najmul Hossain Shanto retained as the red-ball skipper:
Retained as the red-ball captain is Najmul Hossain Shanto, whose time in that position has been marked by both major controversies and some noteworthy accomplishments. Prior to this, he had notified the BCB that he wanted to resign as captain, citing his personal performance decline and the emotional strain as reasons.
A mutual arrangement appears to have been reached between the cricketer and the board, as Najmul Hossain Shanto has been kept as the Bangla Tigers’ Test captain despite his desire to stay in charge.
He will remain captain for another year, while Mehidy Hasan Miraz, an all-rounder, will assist him by continuing to serve as vice-captain.
“Top-order batter Najmul Hossain Shanto has been retained as Bangladesh’s Test captain for another year, continuing in the leadership role he assumed in 2024. All-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz also continues as the vice-captain, maintaining the leadership pairing that led the team in the previous season,” BCB stated in a statement on Wednesday while announcing the Test squad.
Litton Das returns to the Test squad:
To continue discussing the team, Litton Das, the great batsman-wicketkeeper, has returned to the Test unit. An injury had prevented Litton Das from playing in the previous series.
Fast bowlers Nahid Rana and Ebadot Hossain have been called up for the games against the Sri Lankan squad. Rana is making a long-awaited comeback after not playing in an international match since July 2023. Additionally, Hasan Murad, a left-arm spinner, has joined the team.
Speaking of the changes made to the Bangladesh Test team from their last series against Zimbabwe, Mahmudul Hasan Joy, pacer Tanzim Hasan Sakib, and left-arm spinner Tanvir Islam have all been dropped.
In the meanwhile, Galle will host the first Test between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka starting on June 17 and Colombo will host the second Test starting on June 25. On June 13, the Bangla Tigers will depart for Sri Lanka to begin their preparations.
