According to Chess.com, the current World Champion Dommaraju Gukesh won his fourth chess event, continuing to make chess history.
He overcame the strong Wei Yi of China in Round 9, advancing to 14.5 points and cutting the distance between himself and tournament leader Magnus Carlsen to just half a point.
Wei defeated the stalwart Petroff in this match, but after Gukesh made what they dubbed the “rare move” 8.Qd3 and subsequently shifted the queen to c4, the commentators were worried that Wei had wandered into world championship preparation.
When Gukesh first faced GM Wei Yi, he took a lot of chances, but he recovered to win handily.
Against GM Fabiano Caruana, Carlsen gave up a pawn, but in the endgame, he converted an additional pawn.
After a traditional tie with GM Arjun Erigaisi, GM Hikaru Nakamura won handily in Armageddon.
Women’s Norway Chess 2025 saw a significant upheaval in the rankings and a decisive conclusion to all three of the traditional games. GM Anna Muzychuk took a two-point lead after defeating GM Ju Wenjun, the Women’s World Champion.
GM Koneru Humpy, the former leader, was in second place after making a mistake and losing a piece versus GM Lei Tingjie. IM Sara Khadem defeated GM Vaishali Rameshbabu to win her second classical match of the competition.
Gukesh had earlier turned the tide of the current Norway Chess 2025 event from a losing position on Sunday with a surprise victory over former World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen in Round 6.
Carlsen reflected on his clash against Gukesh, “The dream of playing a really good tournament burst with that game… I wanted a score that reflects the fact I think I’m still significantly better at chess & since I couldn’t achieve that, a potential win of the tournament would not mean as much,” Carlsen stated in a video posted by Chess.com on X.
