After experiencing victory at the National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships 2025, Indian long jumper Murali Sreeshankar extended his winning run to five competitions this season. However, he was unable to meet the qualifying standards for the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo next month.
According to Olympics.com, Sreeshankar missed the 8.27-meter men’s long jump qualifying mark for the World Athletics Championships despite making an 8.06-meter leap. The 26-year-old has won every competition in which he has competed since recovering from a knee injury that prevented him from competing in the Olympics in Paris last year.
Sreeshankar’s six efforts were his final opportunity to secure a direct qualification for the main event in Tokyo next month. Sreeshankar holds the national record of 8.41 meters and has cleared 8.27 meters five times in his career. Swaminathan R (7.70m) and S Lokesh (7.71m) won bronze and silver, respectively.
Rohit Yadav led the field and threw a personal best of 83.65 meters in the men’s javelin throw competition. Second and third place went to Sachin Yadav (83.20m) and Shivam Lohakare (80.20m), respectively.
To be eligible for the World Championships, Rohit, who was rated 57th on the Road to Tokyo 25 list, had to surpass the 85.50-meter entry requirement.
India is anticipated to enter three throwers in the Tokyo competition, with defending world champion Neeraj Chopra being guaranteed a spot. Yash Vir Singh (30th) and Sachin Yadav (22nd) are now ranked inside the cut-off ranks. Yash Vir Singh placed fourth at the Inter-State Championships by throwing his javelin 76.22 meters.
