‘Eat Right Challenge,’ Tirupur district is ready to assure that people have the availability of hygienic food with great nutritional value while eating out. District collector K Vijayakarthikeyan launched the challenge on Monday.

Tirupur is among the 150 districts in the country that were chosen to launch the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India’s (FSSAI) challenge this year.

The challenge intends to promote district-level officials to get certain that edible items sold in their end are safe, hygiene and of high quality, and to generate awareness among the people to make healthier food choices, according to an FSSAI official.

“As per the central government’s guidelines, we would be carrying out a broad range of activities before the end of March, and we would be updating them frequently about our development. A crew from the central government would investigate the district for evaluation,” the official said.

As part of the challenge, they would be training around 2,000 food supervisors, Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) workers, and Asha workers, and obtain 300 samples from eateries to examine their quality, the official said. Officials would examine 25 schools in the district as part of the ‘Eat Right school’ section of the challenge.

They would also teach the school management to avoid junk foods and promote them to teach a behavioral change in choosing food items between the students, the official said.
