According to the ICC website, the West Indies’ decisive 202-run series-ending victory over Pakistan in Trinidad on Tuesday ended a 34-year drought.

The West Indies posted 294/6 thanks to an undefeated innings of 120 from captain Shai Hope, while the home team won the series 2-1 thanks to a six-wicket reply from pacer Jayden Seales, who bowled out Pakistan for just 92.

After missing out on qualifying for the most recent tournament in India in 2023, the West Indies will be feeling very confident as they try to secure a spot at the next ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in 2027. It was their first bilateral ODI series victory against Pakistan since November 1991.

With Gudakesh Motie out for five in the 42nd over and the score at 184/6, the West Indies appeared to be in trouble, but Hope and Justin Greaves (43 not out) worked well together with some late, soaring hitting to make sure the hosts scored a respectable total at Brian Lara Stadium.

With just Chris Gayle (25) and Brian Lara (19) ahead of him, Hope moved into third position for the most ODI hundreds by a West Indies men’s player. It was his 18th ODI century of his career, surpassing the record held by the legendary Desmond Haynes (17).

After that, Seales tore through Pakistan’s top order to leave the visitors reeling at 23/4. The in-form right-armer came back at the last second to clear up the tail and finish with the third-best stats (6/18) by a West Indies bowler in men’s ODI cricket history.

In men’s ODI cricket, it was also the West Indies’ fourth-largest victory (by runs), and Hope expressed that his team had a lot to gain from both the game and the series.
