This year marks the revival of the United States Basketball League (USBL), formerly known as “The League of Opportunity,” bringing back to communities and basketball enthusiasts nationwide a legendary spring basketball tradition. With a 24-game season scheduled to begin in March 2026, the USBL, which was established in 1985 by the late Daniel Meisenheimer and has long been known as a development platform where future NBA players honed their skills, enters a new era.

A history of opportunity

From its inception, the USBL served as a testing ground for top talent, adhering to a late spring/early summer schedule. The USBL’s significance in player development and community entertainment is highlighted by the alumni, which include NBA players like Muggsy Bogues, Manute Bol, Spud Webb, Anthony Mason, Darrell Armstrong, and Mario Elie, as well as celebrities like Nancy Lieberman and NFL Hall of Famer Randy Moss. More than 150 players have made the transition from the USBL to the NBA. Cliff Levingston, the general manager and head coach of the Las Vegas Stars, is one of the notable NBA veterans who are actively active in the USBL. “I’m overjoyed to have contributed to the wonderful heritage of the USBL. Joining a wonderful set of teams in relaunching the USBL is an honor,” Levingston remarked.
