At the Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar Stadium on Sunday, the Shivamogga Lions defeated the Mysore Warriors by an incredible three wickets in the Shriram Capital Maharaja Trophy KSCA T20.
Mysore Warriors set a goal of 181 runs thanks to Karthik SU’s half-tonne. With 24 runs needed in the last over, the Shivamogga Lions had a mountain to climb, but Avinash D came through to score the game-winning runs and give them their first victory of the year.
Tushar Singh was dismissed by Prasidh Krishna (2 off 3) in the opening over of the second innings. With Nihal Ullal’s (4 off 4) wicket in the next over, Kumar LR further damaged the Lions’ chances of winning the season. The position for the Lions became dire when Dhruv P (2 off 3) was run out by Kumar LR (impact player) in the third over.
Then, with four boundaries and one six, Aneeshwar Gautam (49 off 35) and impact player Rohit Kumar (46 off 33) came into their own, helping the Lions reach 55 runs at the conclusion of the powerplay with a four and a six.
This combination prevented the loss of wickets, but the Mysore Warriors’ field was difficult to get past, holding the Lions to 79 runs after 10 overs. The 79-run stand ended after 51 balls as Aneeshwar attempted to put on the pedal with another boundary and a six but was quickly dismissed by Venkatesh M. Rohit tried to take responsibility, but as the target drew further away, Venkatesh M attacked once more.
Venkatesh M also sent him back, but Anirudha Joshi (0 off 1) took his place. The Lions needed 47 runs in the final four overs, leaving them in the trenches. The next player to leave under extreme strain was Hardik Raj (21 off 14), who was able to catch Prasidh M Krishna.
Prasidh Krishna further cornered the Lions with a tight six-run over, but they still needed 30 runs in the next two overs. Avinash D (24) went on to make two fours and one six to completely change the course of the match. Avinash knocked it out of the park and scored their first win of the season against all odds, just as the Lions were looking for a victory and needed six runs in the final ball.
Karthik SU (53 off 34) was on fire and hit rapid boundaries as the Mysore Warriors started the first innings. Venkatesh M (3 off 9) was happy to rotate the strike with singles before leaving in the sixth over, caught by Dhruv Prabhakar. But Karthik didn’t appear to be slowing down, hitting three fours and three sixes to lead the Warriors to 47 runs at the end of the powerplay.
The Lions were unable to devise a strategy to stop Karthik, who reached his half-century in 33 balls. But Sharath Srinivas was dismissed by Anand Doddamani in the tenth over (8 off 13), and Hardik Raj made the breakthrough in the following over, removing Karthik after three sixes and five fours.
As wickets kept falling and captain Manish Pandey (7 off 5) was removed by Dhruv Prabhakar, the Warriors were in a tight spot. Lankesh K S (24 off 20) and Yashowardhan Parantap (12 off 11) made an effort to rally, assisting the Warriors in reaching 110 runs after 15 overs.
But in the following over, Darshan M B got rid of them both. Stepping up, Harshil Dharmani (37* off 16) hit two sixes and three fours. In the last overs, Sagar Gowtham (30* off 11) added three sixes and one four, forming a 64-run partnership in just 26 balls and helping the Warriors reach 180 in 20 overs.
