During Thursday’s UPT20 match in Lucknow, Rinku Singh was playing at a high level. During his 48-ball spell, he hit eight sixes as a skipper of the Meerut Mavericks, helping his team overcome Dhruv Jurel’s Gaur Gorakhpur Lions by six wickets at the Ekana Stadium. With seven balls left, his team was chasing down 168 runs when he hit an undefeated knock of 108 runs.
In the meantime, he reached his century off just 45 balls in the last over, hitting a hat-trick of sixes off Gorakhpur bowler Vasu Vats. With a strike rate of 225, he hit seven fours and eight sixes in his knock.
With the victory, Meerut moved up to third place in the rankings. Additionally, the knock amply supported his nomination for the Asia Cup in 2025. The absence of Washington Sundar from the list caused some people to take notice.
Explaining Rinku’s selection, chief selector Ajit Agarkar had stated, “He [Sundar] has always been in the scheme of things. At the moment, we have two mystery spinners/wristspinners in Varun and Kuldeep, and Axar has been around for a while. When we need four spinners, he may always be in the mix. For now, we felt we needed an extra batter in Rinku. And you could only pick 15. If there were 16, maybe he could’ve been in.”
Gorakhpur dropped to 167 thanks to Jurel (38), Akashdeep Nath (23), and others. Nishant Kushwaha (37), meantime, also made a respectable knock. However, Rinku led his side to win by himself, making the run pursuit appear simple.
