Jasmine Paolini defeated Veronika Kudermetova in a tough semifinal match to advance to her first Cincinnati Open finals.
Veronika lost 6-3, 6-7 (2), 6-3 to Jasmine Paolini. This is Jasmine Paolini’s third-place finish overall and his second WTA 1000-level final. The Italian Open in May of this year and the Dubai Championships last year were the two finals she had previously won.
In the second set, Jasmine Paolini appeared to be in complete control and won 6-3, 5-4. After Veronika’s comeback in the second set, which led to a tie-break that Jasmine won, she had not been under any pressure, but things began to change.
Jasmine didn’t look back after that and won the third set with relative ease.
Speaking about the win as per the official WTA website, Paolini stated, “Until that moment, everything was fine. I was okay, I was focused, a bit relaxed. And then I was really nervous. I said to myself after losing the tiebreak that I had to step back and move forward, you know, be in the present and not think about what happened.”
“That was the key – to forget, to fight and be in the present,” she attached.
Paolini is the first Italian woman to advance to the Cincinnati singles final during the Open era.
She has scheduled her title match against Iga Swiatek of Poland, who defeated Elena Rybakina 7-5, 6-3 to go to her maiden Cincinnati final.
The number three seed fell behind 5-3 in one set after losing two semifinals here before, but the Wimbledon winner won 10 of 13 games to defeat Rybakina for the fourth time in a row.
She will be trying for her eleventh WTA 1000 championship after making it to the finals of the last four tournaments three times.
Following her match, Swiatek stated, “Oh my God, for sure that was a tough match. At the beginning, the level was pretty crazy; sometimes, we could not even run to the second ball … but I was there to play with intensity, good quality, and I am happy with the performance.”
