The events are important gatherings that bring together community members, employers, industry leaders, and medical professionals to support the mission of the American Diabetes Association to prevent and cure diabetes and enhance the lives of all those impacted by the disease.

World Diabetes Day, observed on November 14 every year, raises awareness of diabetes, one of the chronic illnesses with the fastest global growth rates. Diabetes or prediabetes affects almost one in two Americans.

“This year, the focus for World Diabetes Day is well-being in the workplace. At the ADA, we know employer support makes a positive difference for those living with diabetes and their employers. Policies that enable people with diabetes to live well matter—at work, at home, and in every other part of their day-to-day,” said Charles “Chuck” Henderson, the ADA’s chief executive officer.

One out of every four dollars spent on health care in the United States is spent on persons with diabetes, making it one of the most costly chronic diseases in the country. The estimated annual cost of premature death, chronic disability-related unemployment, and lost productivity at work is $106.3 billion.

The American Diabetes Association celebrates 85 years of promoting a life free from diabetes and all of its complications this year. Diabetes care, treatment, and knowledge have advanced remarkably throughout the years. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) is urging everyone to join the fight to end diabetes in any way they can during American Diabetes Month® in November, including through State of Diabetes events and other outreach.
