Bengal’s second straight victory in the 2025–26 Ranji Trophy came on Tuesday thanks to a game-winning stint from Mohammed Shami, who served as a reminder of his fitness.

At Eden Gardens, Bengal defeated Gujarat by 144 runs, and Shami finished with 5 for 38, his 13th first-class five-for. Over the course of 28.3 overs, he took eight wickets in the encounter. Shami has taken 15 wickets at an average of 10.46 after four innings, tying for third place on the Ranji season’s wicket-taker’s leaderboard.

“When you perform like this, it feels good both mentally and physically,” remarked Shami. “It is quite satisfying to bounce back from a challenging period and perform well. Following the [2023] World Cup, things were difficult and unpleasant.”

However, since my return late last year, I have participated in the Champions Trophy, the IPL, white-ball cricket, the Ranji Trophy, and the Duleep Trophy. I have returned to my previous rhythm. I can tell that I still have a lot of cricket left in me.

Shami has been candid about his disappointment at not being selected for the England tour with India. When asked about Shami’s availability during the West Indies Tests squad announcement, head selector Ajit Agarkar said the quick bowler hadn’t played enough cricket.

Since then, there have been some media exchanges between the two, albeit not directly directed at one another. In light of all of this, Shami was questioned about whether this felt like a second return, a proposition he rejected.

“This was not a comeback match for me,” he explained. Perhaps it would have made sense if you had stated it the previous year. Nevertheless, we did make a unique comeback in this match.

We had already taken three points [the lead from the first innings] when we opted to bat for eight to ten overs today. Despite the challenging circumstances, the boys gave their utmost effort. It’s uncommon to turn the game this way, particularly on a surface like this. The lads are doing an excellent job.

In response to rumors that the move would help him in the South Africa Tests, Shami decided to disassociate himself from the rumors on social media and reiterate that his goal was to give it his all wherever he played.

“Yes, I knew this question would come,” responded Shami, grinning wryly. “Controversy follows me.” What more can I say or do? Social media has twisted today’s world. It is my duty to do well. Whenever I have the chance, I will do my best. Let God handle the rest. My home is Bengal. Each game I play for Bengal is unique.

Coach Laxmi Ratan Shukla was quite complimentary of Shami’s discipline, emphasizing that he was in excellent rhythm and completely fit.

Everyone watched Shami bowl. “I have nothing more to add,” he stated. “His performance was flawless. His commitment is unquestionable. Everyone on the planet is aware of Mohammed Shami. His bowling serves as the certificate; therefore, he doesn’t need one from anyone else. He’s in perfect physical condition.

Shukla did, however, wish to exercise caution when it came to Shami’s workload. “We can’t make Shami play all seven matches, though he keeps saying he’s fit and wants to play every game,” he explained. He’s racing in an incredible manner.

His run-up and rhythm during his time playing for India are exactly the same as they are now. Despite taking 500 wickets, he still has excellent rhythm. He’s playing now with total composure.
