As India gets ready to play South Africa in the ICC Women’s World Cup, all-rounder Deepti Sharma is only four wickets away from becoming the second member of her squad to surpass the 150-wicket mark in women’s ODI cricket.

After victories over Pakistan and Sri Lanka, an unbeaten India will face a determined South Africa, who appear to have recovered from a devastating ten-wicket loss to England despite defending just 70 in the campaign opener. This comes after a victory over New Zealand in which Tazmin Brits hit a record-breaking century. Right-arm off-spin will be the ‘X’ element for Deepti, who has had a successful campaign thus far.

In 114 games, Deepti has taken 146 wickets at an average of 27.92, including three five-wicket hauls, with best scores of 6/20. The renowned pacer Jhulan Goswami, who took 255 wickets in 204 matches at an average of 22.04, is ahead of her and is India’s second-highest wicket-taker in women’s ODI cricket.

In addition to providing 78 runs in two innings, with the highest score of 53 against Sri Lanka, Deepti is now the tournament’s top wicket-taker with six wickets, three in each match, at an average of little over 16 and best figures of 3/45.

One noteworthy statistic is that Jhulan leads all women’s ODI cricket players in wickets taken.
