After Mohammed Shami’s lackluster performance in the league thus far, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) head coach Daniel Vettori has backed the seasoned right-arm seamer.
In the 18th edition of the lucrative league, Shami had a dismal IPL 2025 season. The right-arm bowler only took six wickets in nine games and gave up runs at an economy rate of 11.23.
Speaking on Mohammed Shami’s poor form in IPL 2025, Coach Daniel Vettori at the post-match press conference following win over KKR stated, “It is a long time ago that he played T20 cricket, so it always takes a little bit to acclimate back into it. The game has progressed very quickly over those 18 months since the last time he played for GT he was a Purple Cap winner. I just think the challenge is remaining consistent for him.”
“I think that’s where he’s at his best when he hits that length and probably just wasn’t at that metronomical best that we’ve seen in the past. And that’s partly a long layoff, that’s partly the game. And I know that he worked exceptionally hard and he was desperate to do well, but it just wasn’t quite his season. But there’s no reason why he can’t bounce back because of the quality of the bowler that he is,” he attachd.
Shami, meanwhile, missed more than a year of on-field play because of an ankle ailment. After a successful recovery from ankle surgery in February 2024, Shami began to have pain in his right knee, which he has been pursuing.
returned to the domestic scene last year and played for Bengal in the Ranji Trophy. Using his expertise, the quick bowler had a successful game against Madhya Pradesh last year, taking seven wickets. There were rumors that he would make a comeback during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, but the series passed with no trace of him.
In 2025, the 34-year-old was tasked with bowling for India in all formats using the new ball. Earlier this year, he played for the country in the Champions Trophy campaign that won the trophy, finishing as the second-highest wicket-taker.
