People are adding ostensibly “healthy” foods or ingredients to their diets as a result of the rise in healthy eating and lifestyle trends. Dr. Dmitry Yaranov, MD, a specialist in cardiology, claims that there is one item we unintentionally eat that is silently harming our hearts more than cholesterol. Let we ascertain what it is:

This one item, not cholesterol, silently harms your heart.

As a cardiologist, Dr. Yaranov noted that he encounters heart disease that is caused by more than just cholesterol. He disclosed in his article, “The #1 thing silently destroying your heart (and it’s NOT cholesterol),” that a common ingredient that is concealed in drinks, snacks, sauces, and “healthy” foods is harming hearts and causing diabetes: Sugar.

However, how does sugar manage to wreak so much damage? The physician claims that eating only one serving of sugar every day is associated with an 18% increased risk of heart disease. Two or more? Even those who exercise have a 21 percent higher rate.

“Over a million new heart cases are linked to sugar.”

According to the doctor, studies conducted in 2025 revealed that consuming large amounts of sugar, particularly from highly processed meals, increases the risk of heart disease by 17%, coronary artery disease by 23%, and stroke by 9%.

It is linked to more than 1 million new cases of heart disease and 2.2 million new cases of type 2 diabetes year worldwide. Sharing important facts, he stated, “A JAMA Internal Medicine study found that people who consumed ≥25 percent of calories from sugar had more than twice the risk of dying from cardiovascular disease compared to those who consumed <10 percent.”

Additionally, sugar aggravates cholesterol, increases blood pressure, fuels inflammation, and interferes with glucose regulation, all of which have a negative impact on the heart and pancreas. Dr. Yaranov noted that the American Heart Association recommends the following intake of sugar:

  • ≤6 tsp/day (~100 cal) for women
  • ≤9 tsp/day (~150 cal) for men

Finally, he cautioned, “Most people eat two to three times that without realizing it.” Check your labels. Keep it to a minimum. Keep your blood sugar and heart healthy.
