A pediatrician from Hyderabad has won hearts with her heartfelt response to a recent order pertaining to oral rehydration salts (ORS), a cause she has been supporting for over ten years. After the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) unveiled a new regulation to safeguard children’s health throughout India, she exclaimed, “We have won it,” in an Instagram video. According to the order, no brand is allowed to market ORS unless the World Health Organization (WHO) has given its formal clearance. Growing worries about the ORS label being misused and endangering children have prompted this adjustment. The objective is to guarantee that only safe and efficient products are accessible to people who require them, emphasizing the significance of maintaining children’s health, particularly during public health emergencies.

ORS: What is it?

Treating dehydration requires the administration of oral rehydration salts (ORS), particularly in children who have severe diarrhea, heat stroke, or other conditions that result in considerable fluid loss. ORS is a particular mixture of sugar and salt that dissolves in purified water. When administered properly, ORS helps prevent diarrhea in children and replenishes lost fluids. Using oral rehydration solution (ORS) under a doctor’s supervision is crucial. Salt poisoning may result from the misuse of ORS. This emphasizes the necessity of recognized formulas and unambiguous labels.

Thus far, the regulations have permitted the use of “ORS” in the titles of items such as fruit drinks and non-carbonated beverages. This was acceptable on the condition that the items had disclaimers that read, “The product is not an ORS formula as recommended by the WHO.” Confusion regarding the products resulted from the fact that many customers were unaware of or misunderstood these disclaimers.

In order to take a firm stand against deceptive labels, the FSSAI has revoked earlier orders. Dr. has been fighting this mislabeling vigorously. “Thanks to every parent, doctor, and advocate who stood by me for this cause!” the doctor said, thanking the community for their support.
