On Monday, India’s Test captain Shubman Gill celebrated his 26th birthday. From a teenage prodigy to a dependable captain, Gill has made a name for himself in India’s batting lineup.

Gill started his career with Punjab and is well-known for his love of huge runs with a dash of flair. He scored a fifty in his first-class debut in 2017 then smashed 129 in the following game in an attempt to get the selectors’ notice.

His actions attracted attention, and he was selected as the vice-captain of India’s Under-19 team for the 2018 World Cup. With a scorching hundred in the semi-final match against Pakistan, Gill made a key contribution and was named the Player of the Tournament.

Gill was still in New Zealand for the World Cup on the day of the 2018 IPL auction. Gill found his first franchise in the lucrative league after the Kolkata Knight Riders, determined to get the potential talent, spent Rs 1.8 crore. Although he made his ODI debut in 2018, he solidified his reputation in Australia during the crucial Test series.

Gill made his debut at the storied MCG in the 2019–20 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, scoring 45 and 35. In Sydney, he added a half-century to top it off. Gill celebrated India’s historic series victory in Australia with a smooth 91. He achieved his first Test century in Chattogram a year later. A month later, at the age of 23, he unleashed a blistering 208 off 149 balls against New Zealand, becoming the youngest player to smash his way to a double hundred in ODIs.

In India’s undefeated run to the final of the 2023 World Cup, Gill scored 354 runs at home. Gill played a key role in the hosts’ 4-1 series victory when England toured India, scoring 452 runs in five Test matches. He was appointed captain of the Gujarat Titans that same year, following Hardik Pandya’s return to the Mumbai Indians.

He was a major contributor to India’s Champions Trophy winning run in 2025. In his maiden assignment in England, he guided India to a 2-2 series draw when Rohit Sharma retired, and he was given the responsibility of captaining the Test team.

Gill has made 37 Test appearances since making his debut, scoring 2,647 runs at 41.35. The 26-year-old has amassed 2,775 runs at an outstanding average of 59.04 in 55 ODIs. Gill has scored 578 runs at 30.42 in 21 Twenty20 Internationals. As the Asia Cup deputy for T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav, he will take the field again on Tuesday.
