After wreaking havoc in Gros Islet, New Zealand swashbuckler Tim Seifert amassed the second-highest score in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) and tied Andre Russell’s record for the fastest century.
Seifert led St Lucia Kings to a six-wicket victory with 13 balls remaining, completing the fifth-highest chase in the CPL, after smashing a 53-ball 125* to take down the Antigua and Barbuda Falcons’ 205-run goal.
Riding high after his spectacular blitzkrieg, Seifert celebrated reaching his century in 40 balls, matching Russell’s 2018 Jamaica Tallawah effort against the Trinbago Knight Riders.
The 30-year-old wicketkeeper batsman started the chase in a spectacular manner by hitting the ball for a six over long-off, making his intentions apparent right away. Jayden Seales was greeted by Johnson Charles with a towering maximum before Seifert smacked him for a six, four, and four.
When Charles gloved the ball to wicketkeeper Amir Jangoo and came back on 17(9), the Falcons felt a little better, but Seifert pushed the acceleration button to force them to face the hard reality. The Kings hammered the Falcons to record 92 runs in the powerplay, most of the season and the third highest in the history of the event, and he swept Shakib for a six.
Just after the fielding limitations were removed, Pakistani spinner Usama Mir gave up a four and a six in his opening over, demonstrating Seifert’s persistent presence as a thorn in the Falcons’ garden. Irshad stunned Odean Smith at short leg to send him back on 11(10) after Seifert and Roston Chase made sure the scoreboard continued to move at a steady pace.
Seifert hit consecutive sixes off Mir in the following over to get to 99, then hustled for a single to reach his hundred. Tim David of Australia showed off his power hitting ability by hitting six, four, and six to Smith’s frustration, but Seales caught him at deep midwicket to record his first wicket in the midst of the debacle.
Continuing his impressive play, Seifert concluded with an undefeated 125, the second-highest total in CPL history, only surpassed by Brandon King’s 132* for the Guyana Amazon Warriors against the Barbados Tridents in 2019.
